The overall objective of the Field Crops Sector of RDC- Yusipang is to contribute to increase the food production and attain self-sufficiency in major food crops like rice, maize, oilseed and wheat through introduction of new technologies and delivering technical support to extension staff and farmers of the four client Dzongkhags (Chukha, Haa, Paro and Thimphu). Field Crops Programme at RDC, Yusipang leads the research and development (R&D) activities of High Altitude Rice, Quinoa and Oil Seeds. It is also involved in planning, coordinating and implementing R&D activities on other field crops in the region coordinated by other RDCs and Central Programmes.
Besides Field Crops R&D activities, Sector also coordinates two national commodity Programmes on Oilseeds and Quinoa.
In addition to the regular mandates and duties, sector also contributes to the formulation of plans and policies related to field crops and allied fields coordinated by Department and other institutions within and outside the Ministry. In the 2016-17 Financial Year, the Field Crops Sector’s plans and Programmes were mainly supported by GOI funded project for Cereals and Vegetables.
