Introduction

Research and development center in Yusipang was an orchard prior to 1969. On 21st May 1969, His Majesty, the third king Jigme Dorji Wangchuk opened it as a Horticulture Research Station. In the year 1995, Horticulture Research Station was further upgraded to Horticulture Research Center. In the year 2008, the Horticulture Research Center was further upgraded RNR Research and Development center having both the Research and Development mandate. The center was under the Department of Forest and Park Services having the forestry component as well. The Royal Civil Servants Commission conducted Organizational Development Exercise in the year 2015-2016 and in the year 2016, it was further renamed and formed in to Research and Development Center Yusipang by taking out the forest component. Further, the Research and Development center Yusipang was realigned under the Department of Agriculture under the Ministry of Agriculture and Forests.

The Research and Development Cennter Yusipang is located in Yusipang under the Thimphu Dzongkhag covering total area of 70.88acc. It is also 30 minutes drive from the Thimphu city.

These RDC –Yusipang supports the farming communities’ and addresses their specific needs. The centre continues to have both its national as well as regional research mandates. Generally, RDC-Yusipang provides technical support to the research and extension needs of the region.   

Mandates

At the national level, RDC-Yusipang is mandated to coordinate the research and development activities of Organic Agriculture, MAP, High altitude crops and vegetable, Potato Program and Quinoa adaption.

At the regional level, Yusipang is mandated to coordinate the research and development activities for in Field Crops, Horticulture Crops, Medicinal and Aromatic plant, Potato and Organic agriculture in Chukha, Haa, Paro and Thimphu Dzongkhag.

RDC-Yusipang Structure

RDC-Yusipang is one of the Research and Development center under the Department of Agriculture as the Department of Agriculture under the Ministry of Agriculture and Forests took administrative and technical responsibilities of the Research and Development Centres (RDC) Wengkhar in the east, Bajo in the west central, Bhur in the south and RDC Yusipang (arable and horticulture programs) in the west. The RDC-Yusipang is administratively headed by the Program Director having Administration section, Finance Section, library and ICT as a support section.

The National Potato Program, Field Crop Program, and Horticulture Program, National Organic Program and Support Services are the five programs under the RDC-Yusipang.
